In under 4 years, I went from being a home-based travel agent with zero clue how to make it work in the online world, to winning Mentor of the Year for Women In Travel helping our industry to build their digital influence.
Join Steph as discuss the concept of Tall Poppy Syndrome (TPS) and its impact on business owners, particularly in the travel industry. She shares her personal experiences with TPS and highlights the subtle signs to look out for, such as frequent undermining, lack of genuine support, and negative criticism.
Question! How’s your little side hustle going?
I don’t know about you but every time someone asks me this exact question about how my little business is going, I actually want to scream!
In recent years I would turn around and thank them for asking me about my business, because I thought they were genuinely interested.
Except now, I wink at them and say, ‘oh you mean my BIG business?’ and purposefully watch them wriggle in discomfort.
Which got me thinking…
How supportive are people, really?
We know that tall poppy syndrome is rife all over the world and the more I research it, the more I realise just how prevalent it is here in Australian culture.
Like, you can’t be too successful if you’ve come from nothing.
Or – you cannot be seen as cheering yourself on, without people around you wanting to find ways to tear you down.
Honestly though, the scariest thing about TPS is that its the people who are the closest to you that often say the most hurtful things that can potentially really shake your confidence.
Which sucks right?
In this weeks podcast, I unravel my experiences on the whole TPS (Tall Poppy Syndrome) topic as well as knowing when to read between the lines when people in your circles start showing their true colours (and what to do about it).
Here are the key things I focus on in this episode:
🤜 The hard truths behind building a business from scratch – especially in the travel game;
🤜 What signs to look out for in your circles of the people who are likely to have TPS mentality;
🤜 When to ignore and when to clap back and stay professional, aligned and on-brand.
If you have a classic tale of TPS that you want to share, hit reply or drop me a voice note on Instagram and let me know.
I’d love to listen and hear about your experiences.
