In under 4 years, I went from being a home-based travel agent with zero clue how to make it work in the online world, to winning Mentor of the Year for Women In Travel helping our industry to build their digital influence.
WELCOME TO 2022!
It’s incredible being back on the podcast and we’ve got it ALL going on!
So in the spirit of leaning into 2022 with our best foot forward, this episode is going to be wavering heavily toward breaking old habits we all have in our travel businesses – because let’s face it, even with good intentions and hopes for the future when in November some of our international borders opened up and we thought we were free — things haven’t really changed though right?
But, here we are.. we are still here – with every ounce of energy and passion we have left in the tank, we are surging into 2022 – with style – new friendships – and new perspective.
But before we go ahead and do any of that – we seriously need to have a serious chat and it’s about cutting all that BS we keep selling ourselves and let go of the crappy habits we’ve adopted over the course of our travel careers. It’s time!
Social media is kinda like dating, you need to lay down the ground work in order to build the relationships you want and if us travel agents are just cutting straight to the chase of ‘hey, this is the south pacific, thanks Carnival Cruise for the image… here’s my number, here’s my email, book now, hurry hurry because this photo is about to self-destruct!
So the BS around wanting to be known as the travel expert in your chosen travel niche, but not actively posting or sharing anything that can serve your travel community long-term needs to go in order for you to see genuine growth, interaction and engagement online.
Because the moment you start posting content that is either deemed helpful, interesting or entertaining – your travel audience are going to #1 – stop the scroll and head over to your profile for a look around – 2# gather the vibe that your other posts are letting off and if there is any sign of human life behind all the advertisement and – #3 they’re going to be looking at the next step they need to take to learn more about you, who you are, what you have to offer and why they need to work with you.
The word brand is so wildly used, and it can get confusing, but to have a personal brand is simply to be known for your own traits, personality, influence and expertise in your space. It is not… and I repeat – it is not your branding, for eg. logos, colour pallette etc. Even though those things do play a part, your personal brand is the feeling you give to people, what people say about you when you’re not in the room, it’s the foundation of your reputation and essentially – it’s your insurance policy.
